Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson were each given a one-place grid penalty after colliding during practice for the Mexican Grand Prix, Nile Post reports. The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) stewards found both drivers responsible for the incident in the stadium section of the Mexico City circuit.
Verstappen, the four-time Dutch world champion, was preparing for a fast lap, while Lawson, the New Zealand Racing Bulls driver, was on an in-lap after a timed lap. The two cars travelled side by side through three corners before making side-to-side contact. The stewards judged their manoeuvres “unnecessary” and “clumsy”, with both drivers acknowledging responsibility.
Before the decision, Verstappen criticised Lawson for accelerating as he approached the hairpin and preventing him from passing. Racing Bulls director Alan Permane described the behaviour of both men as “unnecessary”. Lawson is competing with Arvid Lindblad and Formula 2 driver Nikola Tsolov for two seats at Racing Bulls next season, according to Nile Post.
