Carlos Alcaraz won the Vienna tennis tournament by beating Australia’s Alex de Minaur 6-1, 6-4. The Spaniard claimed his fourth title of the season and the 28th of his career, while extending his winning run at ATP 500 tournaments to 26 matches, according to SABC News and The Namibian.
The final lasted one hour and 27 minutes, and Alcaraz converted his first match point on De Minaur’s serve. The Australian took the first set to seven games all and saved break points in three of his first four service games in the second, reports The Namibian. Alcaraz eventually secured the decisive break in the tenth and final game.
De Minaur had been on a run of ten consecutive indoor wins before the final. Alcaraz described his opponent as a “really dangerous” player because of his speed, explaining that he had to stay focused and win every point, according to The Namibian.
The Vienna title follows his win in Tokyo four weeks earlier and victories in Doha in February. These three ATP 500 titles were won on hard courts. Alcaraz then spent nearly five months out with a wrist injury before returning at the US Open, where he was knocked out in the quarter-finals. The seven-time Grand Slam champion said his week in Vienna had helped him gain confidence on indoor courts, reports The Namibian.
