Erik ten Hag believes Cristiano Ronaldo could no longer maintain the level required at Manchester United and refused to put the team first. The former United manager made the remarks in an interview with ESPN NL, according to Vanguard.

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag believes Cristiano Ronaldo could no longer perform at the highest level after leaving Juventus in 2021. The Dutchman, now technical director of FC Twente, made the remarks on Sunday on ESPN NL’s Goedemorgen Eredivisie programme, Vanguard reports.

Ten Hag also said that the Portuguese forward’s lack of physical commitment and reluctance to put the team first had created difficulties in the dressing room. He acknowledged that the players respected Ronaldo and wanted to play for him, while judging that his performances had declined.

Ronaldo returned to Manchester United in 2021, aged 36, and scored 27 goals in 54 matches under Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Ten Hag. The club terminated his contract in November 2022, after an interview in which the player said he had felt betrayed by Ten Hag and criticised Manchester United’s management, Vanguard recalls.
