Peter Schmeichel, a former Manchester United star, blamed Lisandro Martínez for the 2-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea. The Argentine defender was sent off after the first goal was conceded, while Chelsea scored their second from the penalty spot, reports the Daily Post Nigeria.
Peter Schmeichel, a former Manchester United goalkeeper, strongly criticised Lisandro Martínez, the English club’s defender, after the 2-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea on Saturday 31 October. The former Denmark international said Martínez was responsible for the loss, reports the Daily Post.
In the 50th minute, Morgan Rogers opened the scoring after taking advantage of what was seen as poor marking by Martínez. The Argentine defender was then sent off for striking Wesley Fofana with his forearm in the penalty area. Cole Palmer converted the penalty in the 64th minute to make it 2-0.
Schmeichel particularly criticised Martínez’s positioning for the first goal and his attitude after being sent off. He also referred to comments the defender had made two weeks earlier about his team-mates and the club. Manchester United had then gone nine matches without a win, according to the Daily Post.
Manchester United’s defeat to Chelsea and the criticism of Lisandro Martínez came in the wake of the 31 October Premier League match. After the game, manager Michael Carrick blamed the defeat on the second half and said he wanted to remain in charge of the club, as reported in his analysis of the match and his statement about his future at Manchester United.
Update on 1 November 2026: Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær says he recommended Michael Carrick to the club’s executives during his own interview for the manager’s job. Read: Solskjær says he recommended Carrick to Manchester United.
