Judge rejects Trump bid to block Alaska Senate result

A federal judge rejected the Trump administration’s lawsuit seeking to prevent certification of the Alaska Senate election result if Republican Dan Sullivan is defeated. According to Punch and P.M. News, Sharon Gleason said the measure was unworkable and could cause confusion or discourage voters from casting their ballots.

P.M. News specifies that the administration wanted an investigation into the number of voters who had chosen the second Dan Sullivan but actually wished to vote for the Republican senator. Donald Trump and the lawsuit accused Mary Peltola of recruiting this candidate to cause confusion; the Democrat denied doing so deliberately.

The judge warned that such a late change to the electoral rules could cause confusion and discourage voters from going to the polls. The case heightened concerns about possible Republican challenges to defeats in the midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress, reports P.M. News.
