An attempted homicide investigation was opened after a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a mobile gendarme in Paris on 31 October, causing burns to his leg. The prosecutor’s office confirmed the proceedings after clashes linked to the mobilisation, according to BFMTV, cited by Anadolu Agency.

The French prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation for ‘attempted homicide’ after a Molotov cocktail was thrown at mobile gendarmes in Paris during the 31 October mobilisation. The investigation was announced by the prosecutor’s office, quoted by BFMTV, after French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the incident as an ‘attempted murder’.

The injured gendarme suffered burns to his leg, which caught fire entirely, and to his calf. He told franceinfo that he was ‘rather well’, while describing individuals who were ‘very hostile’ and, in his view, sought to intimidate and injure law-enforcement officers.

The mobilisation against the rising cost of living and government policies remained generally calm, but clashes occurred in several French cities. The French Interior Ministry reported 565 arrests across the country by 9pm on Saturday, according to BFMTV.

The investigation was opened the day after clashes following a demonstration in Paris and the attack on a gendarme seriously burned by a Molotov cocktail, which occurred on 31 October.
