The Gaza Strip reportedly needs 200,000 tents to protect displaced families during its fourth winter of war, Palestinian Social Development Minister Samah Hamad said. Worn-out shelters provide little protection from the cold, while deliveries remain severely limited because of Israeli restrictions, according to the minister, quoted by Palestinian media.
The Gaza Strip needs 200,000 tents to shelter displaced families during its fourth winter since the war began, Palestinian Social Development Minister Samah Hamad said on Sunday 1 November, according to La Presse de Tunisie. Existing shelters are badly damaged and no longer provide sufficient protection from the cold and bad weather.
Deliveries are limited to a few dozen tents because of restrictions imposed by the Israeli authorities, Samah Hamad said. The ministry is therefore prioritising the provision of reinforced plastic sheeting, while families are salvaging iron from the rubble of their homes to reinforce their shelters.
The minister also warned of deteriorating food security in Gaza, which she attributed to the blocking of aid deliveries by United Nations organisations, including the World Food Programme.
