Gunmen abducted a first-year student at Plateau State University in Bokkos, Nigeria’s Plateau State, and shot and injured another person in an off-campus residential area. The university says it has been informed of the shooting, the second such incident in four weeks, while students are calling for security forces to intervene, Leadership reports.
A first-year student at Plateau State University in Bokkos was abducted by armed men suspected of being kidnappers on Saturday evening, while another person was shot and injured in an off-campus residential area, according to a student quoted by Leadership. Both incidents took place at about 8.40 pm in Bokkos Local Government Area, in Nigeria’s Plateau State.
The abducted student had gone out with another student when she was intercepted. A member of the university community, who confirmed the incident on condition of anonymity, said it was the second such attack in student residential areas in four weeks.
The university, led by Professor Shadrack Best, can accommodate about 1,000 students in its halls of residence, while the institution has nearly 20,000 students. It says it intends to expand accommodation capacity and improve security with the support of Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
