Iran warns that a new war with the United States could last longer than the previous conflict, after Donald Trump threatened new strikes on Iranian targets. Military spokesman Mohammad Akraminia says Washington could determine neither its timing nor the conditions for its end, according to Citizen Digital and IOL. Diplomatic efforts remain uncertain, while Tehran says it is preparing both for defence and negotiations.
Donald Trump said the United States could strike “one or two” remaining sites in Iran within ten minutes, naming Pickaxe Mountain, an alleged underground nuclear complex. The threat comes as talks between Washington and Tehran stall and new US strikes were prepared after the US elections on 31 October, according to Citizen Digital and IOL.
Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei said he had received a letter from US Vice-President JD Vance aimed at restarting discussions. He said he had noted a positive change in the US tone, while stating that he had not yet replied. Tehran is demanding, among other things, the unfreezing of its assets abroad, an end to the US naval blockade of its ports, the lifting of sanctions and an end to the war on all fronts, according to IOL.
Iran says it controls the Strait of Hormuz and has repeatedly targeted vessels that tried to cross it without its authorisation. The United States has imposed a naval counter-blockade on Iranian ports, IOL reports.
The United Arab Emirates hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough but is preparing for a new escalation, said Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the Emirati president, at a conference in Manama. In Tehran, residents expressed differing reactions to the threats of renewed fighting, according to IOL.
