Donald Trump insulted Norway at a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, after the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to South African jurist Navi Pillay. The US president also complained that the Nobel Committee had not honoured him, La Nouvelle Tribune reports.
US President Donald Trump threatened on Sunday 25 October 2026 to exclude Norwegian nationals from the United States during a rally in Port Huron, Michigan. He linked this hostility to the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to South African jurist Navi Pillay, saying he no longer wanted to welcome Norwegians because he had not received the prize, La Nouvelle Tribune reports.
Trump also called Norway a “shithole country” and described Navi Pillay, a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and former judge of the International Criminal Court, as “a woman nobody had ever heard of”. Norway’s foreign minister, Espen Barth Eide, told public broadcaster NRK that the Nobel Committee was independent of the government and that Trump had “a style all his own”.
The Nobel Committee is appointed by the Norwegian Parliament but chooses the laureate independently. On 9 October, the day the prize was announced, Trump had already denounced an “indelible stain” on Norway. In January 2026, he had written to Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre that he no longer felt “obliged to think purely of peace”, after Norway had “decided not to give him” the prize. The US administration has announced no measures targeting Norwegian nationals.
