Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian blamed the United States for the failure of negotiations on an interim agreement and called for diplomacy to resume. As Donald Trump threatened a new military operation and Tehran warned Washington of the consequences of possible strikes, Pezeshkian was speaking on Iranian state television, Africanews reports.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian blamed the United States on Saturday for the failure of negotiations on an interim agreement with Tehran, in an address broadcast on state television, according to Africanews. He nevertheless called for a new diplomatic initiative to reach an agreement.

Masoud Pezeshkian is demanding that Washington end its threats and lift the sanctions imposed on Iran before any resumption of talks. Military tensions remain high: the New York Times reported that US and Israeli forces had allegedly prepared new plans for strikes against Iran, potentially after the US midterm elections scheduled for November.

Donald Trump warned on Friday that the United States could launch a new military operation against the Islamic Republic. Tehran responded that renewed strikes would expose Washington to serious consequences, as the positions of the two sides remain far apart, Africanews reports.

Masoud Pezeshkian’s statement came after Trump threatened to intensify the US offensive against Iran on 25 October, amid rising tensions.
