Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will begin a fourth presidential term in Brazil after defeating Flávio Bolsonaro, promising to deliver the best term in the country’s history. The president-elect will have to govern with a conservative Congress in a deeply divided country, reports RSTP.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva promised that his fourth term would be “the best” in the country’s history after his re-election against conservative senator Flávio Bolsonaro. He made the statement during his victory speech in São Paulo, according to RSTP.

Lula thanked young people who, he said, had mobilised to defend democracy. He also praised older people who went to the polls, sometimes accompanied by their grandchildren, and said the election had recorded the lowest number of abstentions and invalid votes in Brazil’s history.

The re-elected president secured more than four million votes more than Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. He becomes the first Brazilian elected president four times and the first candidate to reach the Planalto Palace without finishing first in the first round. His new term begins with a Congress in which Flávio Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party holds a majority in both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

The promise comes after Lula was re-elected with 51.76% of the vote, announced on 26 October, and Flávio Bolsonaro contested the result, reported the same day.
