UN commission accuses Israel of extermination in West Bank

A UN-mandated commission of inquiry has accused Israeli authorities and forces of crimes against humanity in the West Bank, including extermination, torture, rape and persecution. It also maintains its accusations of genocide in Gaza, according to Agence France-Presse.

An international commission of inquiry mandated by the UN has accused Israeli authorities and forces of committing crimes against humanity against Palestinians in the West Bank, including extermination, according to its report published on Monday 26 October. It also maintains its accusations of genocide in Gaza, AFP reports.

The report also lists crimes against humanity including torture, rape and other sexual violence, as well as persecution. The commission says these acts are based on discriminatory grounds, including nationality, race and ethnicity.

The findings follow several recent events in the West Bank, including the displacement of 1,200 Palestinians in Hebron after an attack on 24 October, and the threat of expulsion facing another 1,300 Palestinians in the same city, reported in two articles on Hebron. On 22 October, Washington accused Navi Pillay, the commission’s president, of broadening the definition of genocide at the International Court of Justice, according to the US accusations against Navi Pillay.
