Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahou says Iran and its allies could seek to disrupt Israel’s parliamentary elections and threatens Tehran with reprisals. He referred to intelligence about a possible attack, while Channel 12 reports that the army chief wants an in-depth discussion of military options, according to Seneweb.
Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahou warned Iran on Sunday that Israel would inflict “disproportionate” reprisals if there was an attack aimed at disrupting the parliamentary elections scheduled for Tuesday 27 October, Le Figaro reports. In a video released by his office, he said Israeli intelligence services feared an attack by Iran or its allies during the vote.
According to Israeli Channel 12, Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir requested an in-depth discussion with Netanyahou about a possible operation that could lead to conflict with Iran. Anonymous military sources quoted by the channel fear that the prime minister could exploit the Iranian threat for electoral purposes.
Campaigning for a new term, Netanyahou has placed security at the centre of his speeches. On Sunday, he also posted on social media an AI-generated image showing an atomic explosion over what appears to be Tel Aviv, accompanied by a message portraying Iran as an existential threat.
The warning comes after the Israeli army chief demanded a written order from Netanyahou on Iran, amid tensions over possible military operations against Tehran.
