Togo consumers’ league calls to suspend water and electricity tariff rises

The Togolese Consumers’ League is calling for the suspension of all increases in water and electricity tariffs as outages multiply. It is also demanding national conferences to reorganise the sectors and denouncing their effects on households, businesses and essential services, in its statement of 12/2026.

The Togolese Consumers’ League (LCT) is calling for the suspension of all increases in water and electricity tariffs and is calling for national conferences dedicated to the two sectors. In a statement, it said consumers were already facing repeated outages, material damage and additional expenses related to generators, candles and lamps, according to Icilomé.

The LCT said the interruptions were also disrupting workshops, small businesses, schools, health centres and water supply. It is calling for consultations with consumer associations before any further tariff changes, as the costs of food, transport, rent and schooling rise while incomes fail to keep pace, according to its statement.

The organisation recalled that an average increase of around 12.5% in electricity tariffs, decided by an interministerial order on 24 March 2025, had been partially suspended after protests. The demand comes after the Togolese opposition’s call for an audit of CEET, published on 30 October 2026, over electricity outages.
