The Agricultural and Rural Development Authority of Zimbabwe (ARDA) delivered 187,704 tonnes of cereals from the 2025-2026 summer season and 60,529.3 tonnes of winter wheat to the Grain Marketing Board, bringing deliveries to 248,233.3 tonnes. The operation aims to strengthen national food reserves ahead of a season threatened by El Niño-related drought, reports 263Chat.
Of the summer cereals, 31,293.46 tonnes are intended for immediate milling needs and price stabilisation. The winter wheat harvest, which began two weeks ago, is continuing: much of it remains stored on farms for bagging and grading, while some fields have not yet been harvested.
For the 2026-2027 summer season, ARDA plans to cultivate 100,000 hectares on its estates, communal farms and irrigated units, as well as with groups of smallholders. Around 60,000 hectares will be irrigated and another 40,000 planted with climate-adapted varieties.
The Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resource Development, Anxious Masuka, believes rainfall will almost certainly be below normal. Zimbabwe’s meteorological department has classified the coming season as a drought year, according to statements reported by 263Chat.
