Senegal’s Ministry of Hydraulics says the Grand Water Transfer has been neither cancelled nor suspended and announces work to secure Lake Guiers by the end of 2026. Funded by the World Bank, it will include rehabilitating the Richard Toll regulation structure and embankments, while the main transfer is due to start in 2027, according to the ministry’s 27 October statement.

Senegal’s Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation will launch work to secure Lake Guiers by the end of 2026, funded by the World Bank. The project notably includes the rehabilitation of the regulation structure at Richard Toll and the construction of embankments around the lake at the Senegalese Sugar Company (CSS), Pakh and Bontou Bath, according to a ministry statement published on 27 October 2026.

The work is intended to increase the lake’s storage capacity and secure the water supply. The ministry says the Grand Water Transfer programme, which provides for a main transfer from the lake, has been “neither cancelled nor suspended”.

Work on the main transfer is scheduled to begin during 2027, while efforts to mobilise funding and preparatory procedures continue. The ministry explains that the credit adjustments made in the 2026 supplementary finance law correspond to the scheduling of expenditure for when it can be committed and disbursed. The announcement comes after the rescheduling of 13.8 billion CFA francs for the water project, announced on 25 October.
