The increase is expected to begin in November and boost public revenues, as airlines anticipate a relaxation of security warnings, according to Libya’s Transport Ministry.
Requests for permits to fly over Libyan airspace are expected to reach 61,968 flights a month from November for the 2026-2027 winter season, according to Libya’s Transport Ministry, cited by Libya Herald. The requests registered with the Libyan Civil Aviation Authority come from international airlines.
The figure contrasts with an average of fewer than 2,000 transit flights a month during the 2025-2026 season. The ministry attributes the increased interest from carriers to expectations that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will lift its security warnings concerning Libyan airspace.
The ministry estimates that the resumption of traffic could increase state revenues and will require improved operational capacity and efficiency. Libya is also being considered as a destination for new air routes: Aegean Airlines announced on 8 October that it plans to launch direct flights to Tripoli and Benghazi from 2027.
