A force and other parties entered the Central Bank of Libya’s headquarters in Tripoli on 22 October 2026, after Governor Naji Aïssa’s resignation was accepted. The bank blamed, among others, Libya’s Ministry of Defence and said it was considering legal action, according to its statement.
A force and other parties entered the headquarters of the Central Bank of Libya in Tripoli on Thursday, 22 October, hours after the resignation of its governor, Naji Aïssa, was accepted. The Central Bank of Libya’s management condemned an intrusion that included the governor’s office, in his absence, according to a statement by the institution reported by Lapresse.
The Central Bank first blamed Libya’s Ministry of Defence, which is responsible for protecting and securing its headquarters. It said it intended to take the necessary legal action to protect its premises and documents, and to hold those responsible for the operation to account, according to the same statement.
The presidency of the House of Representatives accepted the resignation submitted by Naji Aïssa in August and appointed Fawzi Abou Khazzam, a member of the Central Bank’s board, as acting governor. The incident came after discussions on reforms held on 12 October with the US Treasury and the suspension of budgets for the national oil company announced on 15 October, according to Lapresse’s publication dates.
