Libya flour price falls below 325 dinars

The price of a quintal of flour in Libya fell from 380 to less than 325 dinars through direct sales from mills to bakeries, a decrease of more than 14.5%. Libya’s Economy Ministry linked the change to the replenishment of soft-wheat stocks, Libya Herald reports, although it found no fall in bread prices in Tripoli.

The price of flour fell from 380 to less than 325 Libyan dinars per quintal in Tripoli, a decrease of more than 55 dinars and more than 14.5%. Libya’s Economy Ministry attributed the fall to direct sales from mills to bakeries on Wednesday 21 October, according to Libya Herald.

Sixteen food-processing companies and groups announced that they would supply bakeries directly. These operators benefit from letters of credit from the Central Bank of Libya at the official exchange rate, according to the Economy Ministry cited by Libya Herald.

The ministry also reported that stocks of soft wheat had been replenished and that available volumes, prices and distribution were being monitored. However, a visit to several bakeries in Tripoli by Libya Herald on Thursday found no decrease in the price of bread.
