Kenyan President William Ruto plans to launch around April 2027 a four-lane highway linking Mau Summit to Kisumu and the Eldoret-Malaba route. The project is to follow completion of the Rironi-Mau Summit link, at an announced cost of 200 billion Kenyan shillings, according to Kenyans.co.ke.
Kenyan President William Ruto has announced the construction of a dual-carriage four-lane highway linking Mau Summit, in Nakuru County, to Kisumu through seven counties, with work due to start around April 2027. He was speaking on Sunday during an interfaith service at Nyamaiya Stadium, in Nyamira County, according to Kenyans.co.ke.
The route will pass through Kericho, Bomet, Nyamira and Kisii, before the Kisii-Kisumu road is also upgraded to four lanes to link Kisii, Homa Bay and Kisumu, and then connect to the Eldoret-Malaba route. Work will begin only after completion of the Rironi-Mau Summit highway, valued at 200 billion Kenyan shillings and expected next year. “The biggest road project we are undertaking is the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit highway, which will be ready next year,” the head of state said.
The 243-kilometre Eldoret-Malaba route is at the preparatory and feasibility study stage, with the pre-feasibility study completed in February 2026 by the Public-Private Partnerships Authority, KeNHA (the Kenyan roads agency) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. The expansion of the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, for which studies and design have been completed, is also expected to start in 2027.
