Kenyan skater Kevin Kiarie criticised the government’s sporting priorities after reports circulated of KSh724 million being paid to Bayern Munich. The sum reportedly concerns a friendly against Ajax in Nairobi on 5 January 2027, according to Tuko.

Kenyan skater Kevin Kiarie called for local sporting talent to be supported after reports circulated of a KSh724 million appearance fee being paid to Bayern Munich for a friendly match in Nairobi. The amount has been confirmed neither by the German club nor by the Kenyan government, Tuko reports.

The match between Bayern Munich and Ajax is scheduled for 5 January 2027 at the Raila Odinga International Stadium, known as Talanta Stadium. On 3 November, Kevin Kiarie shared comments by Kenyan singer Bien Baraza, who challenged the country’s budget priorities and referred to the lack of support given to local athletes.

Kiarie largely funds his international appearances through his own resources and fundraising. He says rewards and reimbursements promised after his medals were paid to him only partially, a situation that reportedly contributed to his absence from the 2026 World Skate Games. His post prompted mixed reactions on social media, with some users supporting his message while others criticised him for mixing sport and politics.

The 5 January match is also intended to serve as a test for Kenya ahead of AFCON 2027, after Bayern and Ajax announced that they would bring their first teams for the stadium’s opening.
