Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang'i showed their unity on Sunday 8 November 2026 amid speculation over a split in Kenya's opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The meeting came after Matiang'i criticised Gachagua for prioritising ethnic calculations, Tuko reports.
Kenyan opposition leaders Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang'i showed their unity on Sunday 8 November by posting a photo of themselves together as speculation circulated over a split in their coalition, Tuko reports. Mr Matiang'i, a former cabinet secretary, accompanied the image with a message: “The brothers will always put Kenya first.” Mr Kalonzo, who leads the Wiper Patriotic Front, added: “We are together. It is the time for Ukombozi.”
This show of solidarity follows tense public exchanges. Mr Matiang'i, of the Jubilee party, had accused Mr Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party, of prioritising ethnic calculations over a united front ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The latter replied that every candidate must count votes, inviting Mr Matiang'i and Justin Muturi, of the Democratic Party, to leave their offices and campaign on the ground. Mr Muturi, for his part, accused Mr Gachagua of intimidating coalition partners.
Edwin Sifuna, Nairobi senator and leading figure in Linda Mwananchi, an opposition movement, was absent from the meeting. The photo comes after Kalonzo Musyoka's call on 25 October for opposition unity for 2027, and unity negotiations between him and Gachagua on 26 October.
