Guinea’s Transport Minister Ousmane Gaoual Diallo says more than 10,000 vehicles that no longer meet road regulations are still on the country’s roads. During an awareness campaign, he called for the Highway Code to be enforced and for the courts to establish responsibility after each accident.
More than 10,000 vehicles that should no longer be on the road are still operating in Guinea, Transport Minister Ousmane Gaoual Diallo said during a road safety awareness campaign. He explained that the figure resulted from checks carried out by his department on the state of the vehicle fleet, according to Visionguinee.
The minister called on transport operators and unions to comply with the Highway Code and strengthen roadworthiness checks. He also called for the justice system to establish the causes and responsibility after each accident, notably to determine whether the driver was intoxicated or whether the vehicle was fit to be on the road.
Ousmane Gaoual Diallo announced that the government was considering a credit mechanism to help owners replace their vehicles. The scheme would not provide them free of charge, but would give access to loans repayable over a long period, provided in particular that transport operators set up a company, according to the minister.
