Mauritanian Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Diay presented the Government’s General Policy Statement for 2026 before the National Assembly on Friday, reports Mauritanian media outlet Initiatives News. The document sets the executive’s priorities for the coming year, focusing on supporting purchasing power, responding to the effects of the international economic situation and reviving the economy and agriculture in the wilayas of the country’s interior.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that progress in infrastructure, essential services, social protection and administrative modernisation was not enough to mask difficulties in accessing healthcare, education, water, electricity or employment for low-income households and vulnerable populations. The statement also provides for the development of a broader project, presented as a lever for the economic and social transformation sought by President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

The presentation comes less than a month after the formation, on 10 October, of the 29-member government appointed by Ghazouani. On 17 October, Mokhtar Ould Diay had already publicly criticised a Mauritanian health centre without water, illustrating the essential services issue addressed in his statement.
