Nigerian public affairs analyst Marcel Ngogbehei accuses opposition figures of taking control of existing parties and then abandoning them after electoral defeats. He cites Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi while reacting to the ADC crisis and an Abuja court ruling, according to Daily Post Nigeria.
Nigerian public affairs analyst Marcel Ngogbehei accused opposition figures Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of using political parties as instruments for their presidential ambitions. He made the accusations on Saturday 7 November in response to a decision by the Abuja High Court that removed the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), according to Daily Post.
Marcel Ngogbehei said political figures take control of existing party structures, sideline their founding members and then abandon the parties when their electoral strategies fail. He cited the political careers of Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president of Nigeria and the ADC’s presidential candidate, and Peter Obi, former Labour Party candidate, to illustrate his analysis, reports Daily Post.
The ADC appealed the Abuja High Court’s decision, according to Daily Post. Ngogbehei believes the party’s leadership crisis shows the difficulties surrounding the legitimacy of its structures after several opposition figures adopted it to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The analyst contrasted this situation with President Bola Tinubu’s political experience, crediting him with a role in the development of the Alliance for Democracy, the Action Congress, the Action Congress of Nigeria and the formation of the APC. Atiku Abubakar had previously accused the ruling against the ADC of targeting his 2027 presidential candidacy, according to previous Daily Post reports.
