The Lakes State electoral committee in South Sudan trained 34 officials responsible for electoral operations in Rumbek, ahead of training 1,890 officials in the eight counties. These officials will prepare voter registration in 270 centres, according to trainer Abraham Gop Achien.

The Lakes State electoral committee in South Sudan plans to train 1,890 officials responsible for voter registration centres across the state’s eight counties next week. The announcement comes after a three-day training completed on Sunday in Rumbek, according to Radio Tamazuj.

The initial training brought together 16 constituency electoral officials and their deputies appointed by the National Elections Commission of South Sudan. The 1,890 officials will be distributed among 270 registration centres, with seven officials per centre, explained Abraham Gop Achien, one of the trainers.

Daniel Laat Kon, coordinator of the Community Empowerment for Progress organisation in Lakes State, called on electoral officials to uphold impartiality, transparency and professionalism to preserve confidence in the electoral process. The chairman of the Lakes State electoral committee, Professor Kot Kuocnin Kuer, announced that supervisors would travel to the counties to monitor the teams’ work.

The training comes as the National Elections Commission of South Sudan already appointed its regional officials on 4 November. It is part of preparations for elections scheduled for 22 December, whose feasibility was questioned by experts on 2 November.
