Nvidia has launched an independent investigation into reports that its chief executive, Jensen Huang, was targeted by an operation involving Chinese intelligence services. The board says it has no evidence that company information or US national security was compromised, according to Nvidia.

Nvidia has opened an independent investigation into reports of an operation by Chinese intelligence services targeting its chief executive, Jensen Huang, the US technology group announced on Sunday 8 November. The investigation will be conducted by a committee of independent directors with the assistance of external legal advisers. Nvidia says it has no reason to believe that US national security or its confidential information has been compromised.

The investigation follows reports by The New York Times about links between Huang and Alice Huang, a Chinese businesswoman associated with Megaspeed International, a Singapore-based technology company. US intelligence officials reportedly believed that she had been recruited by China's Ministry of State Security as part of an operation intended to gather information about Nvidia and attempt to influence its decisions concerning China's supply of advanced artificial intelligence chips.

Jensen Huang, 63, supports the investigation and has pledged to cooperate with it, according to Nvidia. He reportedly also acknowledged in a message to employees that he had had a romantic relationship with Alice Huang and apologised to his wife, family and colleagues, according to Axios and Reuters. Republican members of the US House of Representatives have also asked Jensen Huang to brief Congress this month on the allegations and his exchanges with the businesswoman.
