China has provided two baggage inspection scanners to the government of São Tomé and Príncipe to strengthen security at port and airport facilities. Chinese specialists are installing them and will train local staff to use them, according to Chinese ambassador Xu Yingzhen.

The installation of the two NUCTECH WooKong H scanners provided by China to São Tomé and Príncipe is being carried out by Chinese specialists, who will also train São Toméan staff to use them, Chinese ambassador Xu Yingzhen said. The equipment can analyse baggage from several angles using three-dimensional images and tomographic slices.

São Toméan Minister of Economy and Finance Gareth Guadalupe said the devices should reduce manual baggage checks and facilitate the passage of travellers. Physical checks should be reserved for situations where there is a suspicion of the transport of suspicious materials, according to the minister.

The São Toméan government also hopes to improve monitoring of customs operations and combat transnational crime through the scanners' resolution. Gareth Guadalupe thanked the Chinese government and people for their support.
