Ghana deploys smart road traffic surveillance

Ghana has recently introduced TRAFFICTECH, a technology-based surveillance system designed to strengthen traffic enforcement and road safety. Its launch has prompted positive reactions on road discipline and, according to IT expert Nuku Atta Kordzo Abiew, opened a wider debate on data governance and security infrastructure.
The Ghana Police Service launched TRAFFICTECH-GH on 1 November 2026, a road traffic surveillance system based on cameras and the electronic issuing of offence notices. The system is intended to collect digital evidence and record certain offences without police having to physically stop every motorist, according to Nuku Atta Kordzo Abiew, an information technology, artificial intelligence and computer vision professional.
The pilot phase of TRAFFICTECH-GH had already reported a reduction in road accidents, injuries and deaths, Abiew writes in 3News. He believes the system could also provide a basis for wider use of smart surveillance, data governance and security infrastructure in Ghana.
