The Congolese Ministry of Communication and Media and UNESCO raised journalists’ awareness of the responsible use of artificial intelligence at a round table in Brazzaville. Discussions covered information verification, data protection, transparency and human responsibility, according to the Congolese News Agency.
The Congolese Ministry of Communication and Media and the UNESCO office in Brazzaville brought journalists together on 30 October in the capital of the Republic of the Congo to raise awareness of the rational and responsible use of artificial intelligence in media and information literacy. The meeting was held during Global Media and Information Literacy Week, according to the Congolese News Agency (ACI).
Discussions focused on information verification, editorial responsibility, data protection, transparency in the use of AI and maintaining human responsibility in journalistic work. The Minister of Communication and Media, Thierry Lézin Moungalla, said AI could speed up the processing of information without guaranteeing its truth or quality on its own. He called for professional ethics and skills to be upheld in the face of algorithms.
The round table follows the training of twelve Congolese journalists in fact-checking, held on 30 October. It also builds on the training of 500 young Congolese people in artificial intelligence, announced on 20 October.
