By , based on STP-Press

São Tomé and Príncipe has received advanced equipment from China to inspect luggage and goods at Ana Chaves port and Nuno Xavier international airport. The donation, valued at 7 million euros, is intended to strengthen checks and combat smuggling, according to STP-Press.

China delivered new equipment on 6 November to São Tomé and Príncipe for inspecting luggage and goods at Ana Chaves port and Nuno Xavier international airport. The donation is valued at 7 million euros and includes a container scanner for the port, two luggage inspection machines for the airport and other equipment, according to STP-Press.

The Minister of State for the Economy and Finance, Gareth Guadalupe, said the scanners would produce high-resolution, three-dimensional images. Luggage containing elements that could pose a risk will be directed to a specific area for additional physical checks, according to STP-Press.

Gareth Guadalupe also said the equipment was intended to facilitate the passage of travellers on arrival and strengthen checks on goods entering the archipelago, particularly against smuggling. China's ambassador to São Tomé and Príncipe, Xu Yingzhen, presented the donation as a means of improving checks at the port and airport and contributing to the fight against smuggling, according to STP-Press.
