South Sudan’s National Elections Commission has handed over the first batch of voter registration materials to the Central Equatoria High Elections Committee, in preparation for the planned national elections, Eye Radio reports. The batch includes registration forms and supplementary forms, laminating machines and reflective jackets.

Commission chairman Gabriel Bol Deng presented the handover as a step towards citizen participation. Central Equatoria High Elections Committee chairman Alphayo Philip Lako called on women, young people, older people and people with disabilities who meet the criteria to register as soon as the process opens. It is expected to begin in early November, according to the announcement made by the commission in October.

The commission plans to distribute the materials shortly to the country’s nine other states and three administrative areas. The handover is part of preparations for South Sudan’s elections, following the submission of the voter register to President Salva Kiir on 2 October, reported in a previous article on the voter register handed to Kiir.
