Xi Jinping announces tighter disciplinary oversight of China’s Communist Party

Xi Jinping says the Chinese Communist Party’s ideological, organisational and behavioural problems have not been resolved at their root and announces tighter discipline. The Central Committee resolution notably provides for mechanisms to monitor officials’ assets, according to Expresso das Ilhas, which reports the Chinese leader’s remarks.

Chinese President Xi Jinping announced tighter disciplinary oversight within the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in remarks broadcast on Sunday 1 November 2026. He said problems of ideological, organisational and behavioural “impurity” had not been resolved “at the root”, and said discipline would become stricter as the party moved forward.

Xi’s position follows a resolution adopted on Thursday by the fifth plenum of the 20th CCP Central Committee and published on Sunday by the official Xinhua news agency. The text provides for increased scrutiny of officials’ assets when their property or family spending clearly exceeds their normal income.

The resolution also extends monitoring to the business activities of spouses, children and their partners, as well as retired officials and former officeholders. It calls for investigations into corruption practices involving nominees, holdings held by third parties, moves between political posts and companies, cryptocurrencies or cross-border transfers of funds.

The text prohibits officials from turning the territories or sectors under their authority into “private fiefdoms” and requires important decisions to be taken collectively. The announcement comes after a record number of senior CCP officials were expelled, announced on 30 October, and tighter rules targeting informal practices conducive to corruption.
