Michigan Democrat Haley Stevens backs Republican Mike Rogers for Senate

Michigan Democrat Haley Stevens has endorsed Republican Mike Rogers in the US Senate race, two days before the midterm elections. The move comes after she lost the Democratic primary to Abdul El-Sayed and could deepen divisions in a state key to control of the Senate, Reuters reports.

US Democratic representative Haley Stevens endorsed Republican Mike Rogers, a Senate candidate in Michigan, on Sunday, two days before the midterm elections. She made the announcement while appearing with him at a church in Detroit, according to Sowetan.

Stevens had lost the Democratic primary to Abdul El-Sayed, the party’s Senate candidate. A planned rapprochement to show Democratic unity fell through after Stevens asked El-Sayed to condemn an advert by an outside group which, she believes, holds Israel responsible for rising food prices. El-Sayed’s campaign had asked her not to attend its events until the election.

Donald Trump welcomed Stevens’s endorsement and invited her to join the Republican Party at a rally in Iowa. Voters are due to renew 35 Senate seats and all 435 House of Representatives seats on Tuesday. Democrats hope to retake control of the House and are in a close contest for the Senate, with Michigan among the decisive states.

Stevens’s endorsement comes after Democrats campaigned for a “blue wave” against the president in the US midterm elections. Trump has also promised to block Democratic measures if they retake Congress, calling himself “Mr Veto” in a pledge made before the election.
