US Republican Representative Riley Moore says Christians in Nigeria continue to face violence, a year after Washington designated the country a Country of Particular Concern. In a post on X, he defended the designation and conditions attached to US aid, while praising the efforts of religious organisations, Vanguard reports.
US Representative Riley Moore said that Christians in Nigeria continued to face violence, a year after Washington designated the country a Country of Particular Concern, according to the daily Vanguard. In a post on X marking the anniversary, the member of the House of Representatives called for continued efforts to defend Christians in Nigeria and elsewhere.
Riley Moore also praised measures taken by President Donald Trump, Republican members of the House Appropriations Committee and faith-based organisations. He said the Nigerian government was showing signs of a willingness to tackle the violence. In particular, he referred to a Christmas without a massacre of Christians, which he said was the first in several years.
The United States designated Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern in 2020, before removing the designation in 2021. Donald Trump restored it in November 2025, citing attacks on Christian communities in the centre and north-east of the country. The designation can pave the way for aid restrictions, sanctions or diplomatic pressure. The previous day, Moore had already described the US designation of Nigeria as justified.
