Nnanyelugo Ike-Muonso, director of Nigeria’s Raw Materials Research and Development Council, has been elected Sub-Saharan Africa’s representative on the board of the global association WAITRO. The vote took place at the organisation’s summit in Istanbul, Turkey, from 26 to 28 October 2026, Tribune Online reports.

Nnanyelugo Ike-Muonso, director-general of Nigeria’s Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), has been elected Sub-Saharan Africa’s representative on the board of the World Association of Industrial and Technological Research Organisations (WAITRO), according to Tribune Online. He won the vote at the WAITRO summit in Istanbul, Turkey, from 26 to 28 October, defeating two candidates, including Botswana’s vice-chancellor Wellington Riach Liamba Masamba and Nigerian vice-chancellor Mohammed Aliyu Paiko.

His term is expected to increase Sub-Saharan Africa’s representation in WAITRO’s governance and in decisions on research priorities, technology transfer and industrial partnerships. Under Ike-Muonso’s leadership, the RMRDC promotes the local processing of raw materials and the commercialisation of research findings in Nigeria, Tribune Online reports.

The election comes amid concerns about the costs affecting Nigerian industry, discussed in an article on the high costs facing Nigerian industry.
