Zanzibar to host inter-island tourism forum in 2027

Zanzibar President Hussein Mwinyi discussed solutions to electricity supply difficulties and new South Korean investment in strategic projects during a visit to South Korea. The visit, which ended on 30 October 2026, also secured Zanzibar’s hosting of the International Tourism Policy Forum for Islands in 2027, Mwananchi reports.

Zanzibar will host the International Tourism Policy Forum for Islands (ITOP) in 2027, after receiving the organisation’s flag during the 2026 edition held in South Korea. Zanzibar President Hussein Mwinyi secured the designation during a four-day official visit to Seoul, which ended on 30 October, Mwananchi reports.

The visit also focused on cooperation with South Korean companies in energy and strategic investments. Discussions notably covered long-term solutions to Zanzibar’s electricity supply difficulties, as well as projects linked to tourism, infrastructure and the blue economy.

Tourism and blue-economy analyst Asmaa Saidi believes hosting ITOP could strengthen Zanzibar’s international visibility, but called for the Mice centres and Binguni hospital projects discussed with South Korean companies Heerim and Samoo to be completed on time. The announcement follows Mwinyi’s negotiations for South Korean funding for Zanzibar, published on 30 October.
