Tanzanian MP Mabula Magangila is calling on the state to increase investment in the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology to turn its research into commercial products and services. He also advocates structured cooperation with the private sector to develop infrastructure and innovations, according to Habari Leo.

Tanzanian MP for Msalala Mabula Magangila has called on the government to increase its investment in the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) and to convert more of its research into marketable products and services, HabariLeo reports.

During a visit by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Culture and Sports to the institute, Magangila advocated cooperation between public authorities and the private sector to develop innovations. He said companies could not replace the state in funding major research infrastructure.

The MP also presented digital data storage and management centres as a possible source of revenue, through services for Tanzanian and foreign institutions. He praised NM-AIST's work in research, innovation and specialist training.

The call follows appeals to strengthen the local processing of Tanzanian resources, notably mineral processing, mentioned on 29 September, and their labelling as “Made in Tanzania”, published on 1 October in an article on Tanzanian minerals.
