Ravaging erosion has destroyed at least 30 houses in Agor-Uwagboe, Edo State, and cut the road linking the community to Ofumwengbe and Egbiri. Residents protested on Sunday and called for urgent intervention by Governor Monday Okpebholo, according to Vanguard.
Gully erosion has destroyed at least 30 houses in the Agor-Uwagboe community in Edo State, Nigeria, and cut off its access road to the neighbouring communities of Ofumwengbe and Egbiri, reports Nigerian daily Vanguard. Residents staged a peaceful protest on Sunday to call for intervention by the state government.
To enable motorcycles to cross the affected area, residents built a makeshift wooden bridge. Ernest Uwagboe, a community member, said the gully was continuing to expand and threatening more houses. He believes the entire community could be swallowed up within three years without urgent intervention.
The community’s spokesman, Kenneth Adoni, said residents had sent several letters to the relevant public services without receiving assistance. He called on Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo to intervene. According to him, the rains sometimes prevent children from going to school and the severed road makes travel to neighbouring areas more difficult.
