The Lagos State Government warned on Friday that the transition into the dry season and the developing El Niño climate pattern could bring episodes of extreme heat, dehydration and heatstroke. The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, called on residents, employers and schools to take precautions, according to Punch.
The high population density and concentration of buildings and roads that can retain heat could intensify temperatures in built-up neighbourhoods, particularly where green spaces and ventilation are limited, Tokunbo Wahab said. Children, older people, pregnant women, outdoor workers, street traders and people with health problems are particularly exposed.
Prolonged exposure to excessive heat can cause exhaustion and heatstroke, with serious consequences in the absence of prompt care, the commissioner warned. He also mentioned dry spells, dust and a possible deterioration in air quality.
