Martha Stewart apologised after posting a photograph of herself dressed as a homeless person for Halloween, holding a sign asking for help. The American personality removed the image and acknowledged that her initial response to criticism was insufficient, according to People and her Instagram posts.
Martha Stewart, an 85-year-old American television host and entrepreneur, apologised on Sunday 1 November for a Halloween costume depicting a homeless person. She acknowledged that the costume was insensitive and humourless after removing the photograph posted to her Instagram account.
On 31 October, Martha Stewart appeared wearing ripped jeans, with make-up to make her face look dirty, and holding a sign reading “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!”. In an initial statement to People magazine, she said she wanted to raise awareness of homelessness and recalled her support for organisations working on the issue. A few hours later, she admitted on Instagram that this response was insufficient and apologised, according to Bénin Web TV.
The post prompted criticism from internet users, who accused her of turning the hardship faced by homeless people into a festive costume. Martha Stewart also acknowledged the economic difficulties experienced by many Americans.
