DR Congo turns Kolwezi mining institute into centre of excellence

Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi welcomed the launch of the transformation of the Mutoshi Technical Institute in Kolwezi into a centre of excellence for mining professions and industrial technologies. Led by Gécamines, the project aims to strengthen training, research and local mineral processing, according to the Council of Ministers’ report.

Congolese President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi welcomed the start of a project to turn the Mutoshi Technical Institute in Kolwezi into a centre of excellence for mining professions, industrial technologies and the local processing of mineral resources. He spoke at the 101st ordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers, according to the meeting’s report.

Led by Gécamines, the Congolese state mining company, the project is based on three pillars: minerals, electricity and education. It is to incorporate EMA technology, developed by Congolese professor Sandrine Ngalula Mubenga, and work in coordination with the African Centre of Excellence for Batteries and the Musompo Special Economic Zone.

Tshisekedi asked that the project be coordinated by the Prime Minister, with support from her office and the relevant Minister of State. He presented training, research and innovation as ways to enhance Congolese skills and process minerals locally. The project is part of the president’s commitment to promote an industrial roadmap in the DRC.
