Malian President Assimi Goïta arrived in Niamey on 5 November 2026, where he met his Nigerien counterpart Abdourahamane Tiani. The two leaders held a working session on bilateral relations and security, economic and strategic issues, according to Netafrique.

Malian President Assimi Goïta met his Nigerien counterpart Abdourahamane Tiani in Niamey on Thursday 5 November 2026 for a working session at the Presidential Palace. The two leaders held brief talks at Diori Hamani International Airport before heading to the presidency, according to Netafrique.

The visit comes as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between Mali and Niger within the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), an alliance bringing together Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. The discussions are expected to focus in particular on security, economic and strategic issues, according to Netafrique.

The meeting comes after the creation of the Confederation of Sahel States in Niamey in July 2024, which made defence and security, development and diplomacy its main areas of cooperation. The AES was preceded by the Liptako Charter, signed by the three countries in September 2023, according to Netafrique.

Goïta’s visit to Niamey follows Ahmed Attaf’s arrival in Niamey on 4 November to deliver a message from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to the Nigerien president. It also comes after the announcement on 4 November of Assimi Goïta’s bilateral visit.
