The Yango technology group is extending its ‘Safer Journeys to School’ initiative to Senegal to improve the safety of journeys made by nearly 2,000 pupils in Dakar, according to Senenews. The programme is being carried out with LASER International and local authorities at two schools: Ibrahima Bèye Primary School in Fass and El Hadj Malick Sy School in Médina.
Pedestrian crossings, speed bumps, road signs and road markings have been installed around the schools. About 80 metres of safety barriers have also been put up at each school to separate pupils from road traffic, while the children are taking part in awareness sessions and practical demonstrations on crossing roads. Both schools received at least three stars in the International Road Assessment Programme’s ‘Star Rating for Schools’ evaluation, according to Senenews.
The initiative builds on an experience previously conducted in Zambia. The World Health Organisation considers road crashes to be the leading cause of death among people aged 5 to 29 worldwide.
