A 65-year-old woman, Kenya’s third confirmed Ebola case and a close relative of the first victim, has died while already in quarantine. The country now has nine confirmed cases, including seven patients under care, according to Kenya’s Ministry of Health.
A 65-year-old Kenyan woman died of Ebola on Friday 23 October while already in quarantine, bringing the number of deaths among nine confirmed cases to two. The Director-General for Health, Patrick Amoth, announced the death on behalf of Kenya’s Ministry of Health.
The patient, the country’s third confirmed case and a close relative of the first patient to die, developed symptoms on 13 October. She was admitted the same day to a dedicated infectious diseases unit, where she received supportive care. Seven patients remain under care in two isolation centres, according to the ministry.
The ministry said all recorded infections were linked to the first patient, while warning that new cases could emerge among people placed in quarantine. The Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak began after a man who fell ill in the Democratic Republic of Congo and travelled through Uganda arrived in Kenya on 3 October. He died on 5 October.
The death brings the previously announced toll to two among the nine confirmed cases, in an update on the Ebola outbreak in Kenya. On the same day, the monitoring of nine contacts after a shared flight was also among the measures reported in the country.
