Ebola in Kenya: nine contacts tracked after shared flight

Kenya’s health ministry is searching for nine people who travelled abroad with the first Ebola patient, including four in Uganda and two in Thailand. Authorities maintain that the eight recorded cases are linked to the initial patient and have distributed protective equipment to 37 facilities, according to Stephen Muleshe.

Kenya’s Ministry of Health has located nine people who took the same flight as the country’s first Ebola patient after they left the country. Health authorities contacted embassies to reach their counterparts in the countries where these travellers are believed to be, said the director of public health, Stephen Muleshe.

The nine contacts are spread across Uganda, where four people are located, Dubai, Thailand, Italy and Tanzania. The ministry maintains that the eight cases reported in Kenya are linked to the first imported patient, who died, and rules out the possibility of community transmission. Four patients receiving treatment are relatives of the first patient and four others are healthcare workers.

The ministry has distributed personal protective equipment to 37 health facilities. It also said that 461 samples from 452 alerts had been analysed. On 22 October, the authorities announced 14 negative tests in 24 hours and no new cases, after the new cases recorded on 17 October.
