Dakar school year: up to 84 pupils per lower secondary class

CEM Adama Ndiaye in Grand-Dakar could have up to 84 pupils in some Year 7 classes at the start of the 2026-2027 school year, following the assignment of 169 new pupils. Schools in the Dakar education district are reorganising classes according to their capacity, Senenews reports, highlighting the difficulties of individual support.

At CEM Adama Ndiaye, a lower secondary school in Grand-Dakar, 169 pupils have been assigned to Year 7 for the 2026-2027 school year. If they all enrol, the two classes usually opened would each have more than 84 pupils, Senenews reports.

The headteacher, Alioune Badara Mbengue, is considering opening a third class, but is waiting to learn the final number of enrolments. Some pupils assigned to the school may stay at their private school, while other families are trying to secure a place at popular public colleges, including CEM Seydou Nourou Tall. These movements make it difficult to estimate numbers at the start of the school year.
