Two men, Umar Auwal and Yakubu Dayyabu, have been sentenced to death for killing Fatima Abubakar and her six children in Kano. The Kano State High Court also sentenced them to life imprisonment for conspiracy and armed robbery, according to Punch.

The Kano State High Court on Friday sentenced Umar Auwal, known as “Breaker”, and Yakubu Dayyabu, known as “Wawo”, to death by hanging for the murder of Fatima Abubakar and her six children, committed on 17 January 2026 in Dorayi Chiranchi. Judge Nasiru Saminu of High Court No. 11 also sentenced the two men to life imprisonment for conspiracy and armed robbery, according to Punch.

The third defendant, Isiyaku Yakubu, was acquitted of the charges of conspiracy and murder. Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Abdulkarim Maude said the state government was ready to carry out the capital sentence if the convicts did not exercise their right of appeal within the period provided by law, Punch reports.

Maude also said Isiyaku Yakubu remained on trial in two other cases, in which judgments are expected later. The prosecution was led by Maude and Salisu Tahir, while the two convicted men were represented by J. I. Musa and A. I. Baba, according to Punch.

The judgment comes after two men sentenced to death for murder in Kano, announced on 2 November 2026.
