The metal bridge over the Revué between Chimoio and Sussundenga in Mozambique’s Manica province has given way again under a lorry probably carrying more than 40 tonnes. Crossing is now impossible for vehicles and pedestrians, after reopening was limited to 30 tonnes, reports Notícias.

A lorry weighing more than 40 tonnes may have caused the Revué metal bridge to give way again on Wednesday 4 November in Manica province, according to Jornal Notícias. The structure links Chimoio, the provincial capital, to the headquarters of Sussundenga district.

Vehicle and pedestrian traffic is now impossible, causing social and economic disruption. The provincial delegation of the National Roads Administration of Manica estimates that the lorry was carrying a load exceeding the 30-tonne limit set for the bridge, according to Jornal Notícias.

The bridge had reopened on 29 October after around 15 days of closure caused by damage from an earlier overloaded lorry. Repair work, including tightening the bolts and restoring the pedestrian walkway, was still under way. Restoration could take several months while awaiting the construction of a permanent structure.
